Open anonymous responses provide direct access to the students\u2019 frame of mind and a great opportunity to reflect on possible explanations for outcomes on statistical scales.<\/p>\n<p>Open questions work well in web-based survey presentations. Success with open questions on computers and on paper has been compared and results show that students are five times more likely to answer on computers than on paper (Johnson, 2003). Response rates can be as high as 70% and answers given on computers are longer and more detailed than on paper (Johnson, 2003). Students are more likely to write more when they type their answer on a computer (Ballantyne, 2000).
